Extra Long Ties - When And Why You Need Them

One things about neckties not too many people tell you is the fact that the tip of those neckties need to reach the middle of your belt buckle

. Too short ties are simply a no no, not to mention it might pronounce your not too flat belly. Some men usually need extra long ties because they are exceptionally tall or have more than average long torso.

Height is not the only factor, however. Neck size is also a determining factor. If you are still wondering whether or not you need to wear extra long ties, you need to add your height in inches with your neck size (also in inches, of course). When the total is 92" or more, that is the indication you need to wear extra long ties.

Regular size ties are usually 56" to 58" in length. Extra long ties have 2 more inches added to them, while XXL ties add a total of 4 inches. XXL ties are usually needed by men whose combined height and neck size is 96" or more.

Average department stores likely do not carry extra long ties; even when they do, the selections are usually very limited. It is usually easier for men looking for extra long ties to shop online.

The type of knots you use to put on your ties play an important role when it comes to wearing extra long ties. There are more or less 180 types of knots documented to date but when it comes down to it, you can split knot's types into two, ones which end up looking like a triangle and ones which end up looking like a tube.

To wear extra long ties, the knots you need to know are only four. The Four in Hand knot, the half Windsor, the full Windsor and Prince Albert knot. The Four in Hand knot and the half Windsor are both narrow and considered small knots but the Four in Hand is more of a tube compared to the half Windsor. These two type of knots do not take too much of your tie so when you want to wear a regular size tie, you might want to try either of these two knot types.

For more formal looks, however, the triangle shapes are in order. Tubish looking knots can end up looking rather sloppy or else, they may unravel slowly and you need to fasten them often. The full Windsor and the Prince Albert knots are what you need. They, however, take lots of the fabric of your ties and therefore you need extra long ties when you are more than 6'2".

To keep things in proportion, choose the big knots if you are a big person. Wearing small knots on a big frame can make you look comical. Tiny motifs are great or if you are not that adventurous, you can wear solid color ties with textures on the fabric. If you are tall but you have a lankier build, go for solid color ties or ones with diagonal stripes.
