Morocco is fast becoming a haven for watersport enthusiasts with kitesurfers
, surfers and windsurfers all flocking to the country's northern coast. The area around the ancient fortified town of Essaouira is heralded as the place to be when it comes to enjoying high swells and strong winds, as well as getting involved in the growing community of surfers in the area. Yet depending on your sport of fancy, there are different beaches you can head to that are all close to Essaouira and offer different experiences. Although, it is safe to say that you can enjoy pretty much any watersport on all of the beaches.
Essaouira beach is perhaps the largest and most popular in the area which is why you will frequently find people trying out surfing or kitesurfing for the first time there. The often mild winds give enough scope for beginners to learn but also allow regulars to enjoy some decent sized waves. Cluttered around the beach is also a veritable network of cafes and bars which regularly house watersport enthusiasts discussing the days surf.
Safi Beach, which is close to Essaouira Beach, enjoys some of the stronger winds and excellent swell, which is why you will find so many surfers in Morocco heading to this particular beach. A ten mile journey out of Essaouira will take you to a secluded spot on the coast known locally as La Grotte (the Cave). Here the large waves make kitesurfing perfect as you can enjoy ample air time to perfect your tricks with the board. It is rarely crowded which is why regulars enjoy the spot so much. Whatever extreme watersport you prefer, the coast around Essaouira will be able to accommodate you.
