All of us at some point of our life, we have experienced at least one kind of eye infection. And we know for a fact, having an eye infection can be very annoying and uncomfortable most of the time. Luckily, most of eye infections are generally easy to treat and managed with healthy eye care habits and with good personal hygiene practices. Moreover, risks for eye infections can be reduced if we have enough eye health awareness.

Eye infection caused by conjunctivitis is the most common type which is the result of a viral or bacterial invasion in the eye. Conjunctivitis is very contagious and can spread easily from one eye to the other and can also affect other members of the family in the household. Although conjunctivitis is the leading cause of eye infection, there are also other sources for an infection.

Corneal infection also known as keratitis, are generally caused by staphylococcus or streptococcus infections. These infections generally occur when the cornea is already weak as a result of an recent or previous eye injury or infection. Eyes that are already vulnerable to infections as a result of allergies or dry eye syndrome can also potentially place the eyes to develop another bacterial infection called blepharitis which affects the eyelids. A person that is a carrier of a virus called herpes simplex causing cold sores, can also aid in the development of an eye infection. Untreated sexually transmitted diseases like the Chlamydia and gonorrhea can also lead a person to eye infections that can permanently damage the cornea.

Since most eye infections don't have much symptoms at the early stages, it is hard to tell that a person is having one right away. Usually, persons with eye infections may experience different combinations of minor signs that are commonly left ignored. Symptoms of eye infections may include: red eyes, excessive tearing, itching, eye swelling, pus around the eye, eyelid bumps and crusting, gritty sensations, painful and burning eyes, and also light sensitivity or photophobia.

Once you notice to have any or a combination of these signs and symptoms that can suggest a possible eye infection, it is best that you make an appointment with your Austin eye doctor right away. Do not just leave any of these signs unchecked if you do not want to lose your eyesight. A simple eye infection, if left untreated can potentially place you in a dangerous situation.
