FIFA 2010 World Cup Will Be First Event In History To Involve 1 Billion In British Bets Alone

The World Cup, which will begin on Friday and will certainly have a large economical effect in countries far outside the host nation South Africa, could be the greatest occurrence in British sports gambling history, bookies stated the other day.

"The World Cup will smash all gambling records, becoming the first sporting event to produce a 1bn-plus betting turnover," said Graham Sharpe of William Hill. Sharpe's estimation is for British-based bookmakers exclusively.

The past most profitable gambling event was the 2006 World Cup, of which Sharpe claims associated turnover of "towards 1bn, but below 1bn. Hopefully this time we're being conservative in our estimates and it could be much more than 1bn."

William Hill - certainly the industry in general - would benefit from Britain going quite a distance, but inevitably losing. "I'd say we're really in an 'anyone but England' situation [in terms of biggest margins," Sharpe stated.

Devoted gamblers in England swell bookmakers' coffers by wagering on England, commonly around 15-2 to win the Cup. England are 4th favourites lurking behind Spain, Brazil and Argentina. The more time England stay in, the more money is gambled on them, and the more the bookies will turn a profit so long as they eventually lose.

Hills affirms one of their clients travelled to London strictly to put a gamble of $85,000 (59,000) on a World Cup accumulative bet concerning six countries either to qualify or not to qualify from the group phases of the match. For the wager to win, Argentina, Germany and Italy will have to all meet the criteria from the group stages while Algeria, Japan and Honduras fail to take action. A winning end result will net the gambler 139,000.

Hill have also applied a 10,000 wager on Italy winning the World Cup from a Scottish customer in Glasgow. "The bet was placed over the telephone at odds of 16-1," Sharpe said.

A different William Hill client, from Lytham St Annes in Lancashire, has secured an 8,824 double on Brazil winning the World Cup this year and in 2014 at odds of 16/1, that can win him 150,008 if it comes off. The identical gambler also staked a 5,173 double on Argentina to win this year and Brazil to win in 2014, at odds of 28-1, which may profit 150,017.
