Facebook Etiquette Tips

Facebook seems to bring out hidden sides of its users. Because of the slightly anonymous feel of using Facebook, users can end up revealing more about themselves than they intended. Here are Facebook etiquette tips to get the most out of Facebook without hanging all your dirty laundry on the line.

1. Think of your audience

When you post something to the internet, the entire world is your audience. Even if you have set your Facebook privacy settings to the strictest settings, it is always possible that what you post today could be seen by a potential employer, spouse, or friend as time goes by. When you post something of a personal nature on Facebook, imagine what your grandmother or employer would think if they read it. If you wouldn't want them to read it, don't say it. This goes for pictures, as well. Don't post anything you wouldn't want your neighbor, priest, or mother to see.

2. Double-check for double meanings

Text messages, email, and online forums all have one thing in common: they are communications made without the benefit of body language and voice inflection. Much of the conversation people have in the real world is decoded against what the speaker is saying with their body or voice. This is something that cannot be done over the World Wide Web. When you are composing something online, it is important to check what you have written to make sure it is clear and free of double-meanings. If your post is misunderstood, promptly correct the mistake with a follow-up post and an apology.

3. Don't flame

Facebook etiquette is needed when engaging in conversations online. When responding to someone else's comments, no matter how inflammatory their comments are, don't respond with hate, bigotry, or verbal violence. Take the higher road and, if you must respond at all, do so in a manner that shows the poster how a person of integrity posts on controversial topics: with clarity, compassion, and thought.

5. Don't drunk-post

Like any other method of communication, Facebook posting should only be done sober. There is nothing worse than waking up the next morning to regret something you've said or done and memorialized online for the entire world to see. If you do make this mistake, delete the photo, comment, or conversation as soon as possible. You may not be able to rectify the situation entirely, but you can at least do some damage control. You may want to make the appropriate apologies, as well.

6. Ignore, don't delete

If you're Facebook friends with someone you actually like but who posts endless spam, app requests, or litanies of what they are doing every second of the day, you may want to remove them as a Facebook friend. Before you do this, consider your other options. Being dropped as a Facebook friend is a rejection that can feel like a kick in the teeth if you're not expecting it. Instead of dropping your friend, you can choose to "ignore" them, an option that removes their posts from your wall but doesn't change their friend status.
