Facebook has set out a strategy it hopes will make it as dominant in mobiles as it is in social networks." Their goal is to make the mobile experience more sociable as well as offering shopping discounts.
The biggest area where Facebook can exploit is the new "checking in" feature. Facebook introduced the idea that businesses can offer deals or discounts to users who check into their sites via the places application.
This alerted Facebook officials who have seen a big interest from users on the social networking site. Therefore Facebook have seen this as an ideal opportunity to target businesses through mobile devices. Some large organisations have already seen the potential success this feature can bring to their business. One of the first partnerships Facebook announced was with "the clothing company GAP. It plans to run a campaign offering a free pair of jeans to the first 10,000 users who check in to their local GAP store using Facebook's mobile application."
GAP and other companies such as McDonalds, Starbucks and H&M have joined in. It is just a matter of time before this list grows. Facebook now have more than "200 million users" using Facebook across various mobile platforms.
With Christmas fast approaching this could be the ideal opportunity for companies to offer special discounts and offers to potential customers.
Facebook is opening a whole new window of opportunities not only for themselves but also for developers and organisations. I hope you enjoy.
