Faced With A Criminal Charge? Here Are Three Things You Must Know!

One of the most difficult things to face can be a criminal charge

. This is especially true if you've never had so much as a speeding ticket before. The judge, the prosecutor, and the attorneys can seem very intimidating and you know your freedom lies in their hands. There are three things you should know about the court system before you hire a lawyer to take your case.

#1 You're Facing High Conviction Rates

If you meet your lawyer for the first time and they tell you there's absolutely nothing to worry about, you may want to turn around and walk out of the office. You may find you're in one of the courts with the highest conviction rates in the country on serious offenses, such as for DUI. This means that you should worry about your case until you find the right lawyer to defend you. Even then, a lawyer that guarantees an acquittal may not be the right one for you, either. Everything is at the mercy of the court.

#2 Know the Courts and Which Ones Handle What Cases

There are two types of courts - trial and appellate. Each county has one trial court, which is also called Superior or Circuit Court. If you're facing a charge in this court, then it's something more than just a city ordinance violation. The Superior Court is located in the county seat and hears thousands of cases a year. These include felonies, misdemeanors, and some traffic cases, but they also hear all civil cases, including small claims. The verdicts given here may all be appealed, all the way up to the United States Supreme Court.

#3 The Right Lawyer Is Essential

If you hire the first lawyer you contact because the price is low, you may be doing yourself an injustice. Most experienced criminal attorneys are not cheap to retain, but the years of practice under the belt may be just what you need. Don't risk your freedom by choosing a lawyer fresh out of law school simply because he has the lowest retainer.

In Closing

It's really important that you understand all the ins and outs of the court system, whether it is in the municipal or county court. Each judge will have their own way of doing things in their courtroom, to a certain extent anyway. The right lawyer will be familiar with this process, which can make things easier on you in the end.
