Facelift And Brow Lift May Help Headaches

Most people undergo a facelift or brow lift in order to improve the appearance of their aging faces

. But a surprising additional result has occurred in other health arenas, as well. It has recently been reported in the medical academic journal entitled "Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery" that migraine headache sufferers may be also helped in the process.

A facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon in order to lift the lower 75 percent of an aging face into a tighter and younger looking position. The areas targeted are the jowls, neck, cheeks and the surrounding facial surface. A brow lift addresses the upper portion of the face around the forehead. Many times these operations are performed simultaneously in order to provide a more attractive and youthful appearance in the entire facial region.

Migraine headaches can be a literal extreme pain. The discomfort from this malady ranges from moderate to severe and may include light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, and pain that is both throbbing and pulsating. Migraines can be so uncomfortable that the stricken person is unable to work or perform any physical activity. The headaches can be caused by stress, hormones, physical activities, medications or simply a change in the weather. Nerves and muscles are affected in the head area and the unfortunate results can be debilitating.

The discovery that brow lifts may help to eliminate migraines came about when a plastic surgeons' patients began to notify him post-surgically that not only did they look great, but their chronic headaches had disappeared. During the cosmetic operation, muscular segments were removed in order to shorten and tighten the external region. As a result, the internal compression which had been causing pain was relieved and up to 80 percent of the patients reported an alleviation of their migraine problems.

A typical facelift and brow lift will take three to five hours to perform and will be done in a hospital under general anesthesia. The patient usually needs to stay overnight and will experience swelling, pain and bruising initially. Within four to six weeks, the patient should be healed and looking great. The results usually last for approximately seven years before the skin begins to show a bit of aging sag return.
