Factors In Buying A Training Collar
When buying a remote training collar, you should think about why you want one in the first place
. A hunter will need a training collar for his dogs, that can be taken with him on his hunts. If you have farming dogs that need a little discipline, then you also need a collar that's right for the job. Do you just need a way to keep your dog reigned in while in your backyard? These questions affect the type of training collar you may need to get. What differs usually among these scenarios is the range the dog owner needs, so he can effectively keep tabs on his dog, or dogs.
The rule of thumb is to determine how far you'll let your dog roam away from you, and multiply that distance by two. Your dog's training collar should fit that range. The goal here is to be able to stay within effective transmission range, at all times. Should you need to call them back, you can; no worries there.
There are three transmission ranges used to categorize remote collars. Short range means a range less than 500 meters. Medium range covers 500-1000 meters. Long range involves 1000 meters and greater.
Three considerations to keep in mind are, the size of your dog, where you assume you'll be letting your dog roam, and just how many dogs you need a remote collar on. There are three available collar sizes - small, medium, and large. If you're only taking your dog out on your backyard, then you only need a transmission range of around 100 meters. But if you're venturing out in a park, or taking your dogs out hunting, or out on the farm, you need a considerably longer range. Some remote training collars can handle anywhere from 2-6 individual dogs.
Other features you should know about
Some training collars' transmitters can tell how far away your dog is from you, via a display on the transmitter. Some transmitters can also tell how long the battery life is on each unit. When out in the field, both are important indicators. A rugged, waterproof design gains importance for hunting and working dogs. Lastly, training collars can work with tone or vibration (or both) - the stimulus with which to control the dogs' behavior. The vibration feature becomes important just in case the dog is in a noisy environment where the collar's tone might be difficult for the dog to distinguish.
