A German Shepherd is a natural and distinctive hunter, and will always look for the alpha dog. This instinct dates back to the origin of the breed, when their sole purpose was as sheep herders.

You need your dog to take their lead from you and to do this you must become the alpha dog. Don't hold back when remonstrating them, they really need the discipline.

Authoritative is one thing, but you must never be physically abusive. They are one of the most sensitive breeds and react badly to being disciplined physically. They can suffer long term mental suffering due to being struck.

Be firm and strong and don't lose your temper when your puppy is naughty, they all are and you should know that. They will soon learn who is boss if you are firm but fair, a change in your tone of voice will soon be all that your dog needs to know he has gone too far.

Ideally, you want mutual respect between you and your dog, and this is easily achieved by heaping praise on them when they deserve it. This makes them very eager to please and they will do anything you ask of them in return for the praise or treat that will make them feel great.
