Facts About The Nasutitermes Corniger Termite

The Nasutitermes Corniger termite has invaded South Florida for the second time

. Here are some helpful facts for understanding this dangerous termite and why it poses such a threat to cities like Naples, Fort Myers, Miami, and West Palm Beach.

1)The Nasutitermes Corniger termite is native to the Caribbean, South, and Central America. It can be found in Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Trinidad, Tobago, and Bolivia. Ironically, areas like Costa Rica do a lot of exporting of hardwoods, including hardwood floors, which may indicate how these termites invaded the U.S.

2)These termites are large enough and dark enough to be seen with the eyes. They have dark bodies and black wings, meaning its easier to spot them compared to other types of termites.

3) Unlike other termites in the U.S. and South Florida, Nasutitermes Corniger termites live above ground. Youll find them both indoors and outdoors.

4)Because they live above ground, unlike the 20-plus other species of termites in South Florida, there is no natural competitor for the Nasutitermes Corniger. Because of this, they are considered highly dangerous and have a high potential for colonizing if not addressed immediately.

5)It typically takes four days to exterminate these termites. Extermination should be handled only by a pest control expert who knows how to treat this type of pest.

6)Numerous species of ants will colonize the nests of the Nasutitermes Corniger once they have been abandoned. That means one good indicator of having this type of problem will be an outbreak of ants.

7)These types of termites really do love company. In addition to attracting ants, they cohabitate with bats, including the white-throated round-eared bat, also known as the Lophostoma silvicolum. Sol if you have ants, termites, and bats, you really, really have a pest control problem on your hands.

8)Scientists dont fully understand how the bats co-exist in the nests of the termites without the termites attacking them.

9)Soldiers of the Nasutitermes Corniger excrete a strong-smelling, sticky secretion at predators, including anteaters, which may suggest why ants seek shelter in these termites nests.

10) These termites first had an outbreak in South Florida in 2001. The Florida Department of Agriculture was thought to have eradicated the issue at the time with heavy extermination sprays. It is not known whether the re-emergence of the animal is from the original outbreak or from a separate invasion.
