Famous Female Fashion Designers

Since time began, there has been a vague conscious awareness of fashion

. Before, with cave people, it was a matter of functionality. With Victorian era clothing it was a matter of cuts, shapes, and colours to truly show off a persons regal bearing. Each decade from 1900 onward brought about a new movement and with it a new choice of fashion, colour, cut and design. There were many, many people behind these movements. Some truly innovative and unusual figures were women.

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born in August, 1883, to a humble couple with little to their name. Her mother died when she was only 12 years old, and Gabrielle Chanel was sent to The Correze, in central France, to the convent of Aubazine. It was here Chanel would first learn to sew. Thanks to her seamstress education within Aubazine, Chanel was able to leave when she turned 18, and took on many different jobs involving a needle. When she was not taking to thread, Chanel performed in a cabaret frequented by cavalry officers. It is believed Chanels nickname of "Coco" was adopted at this point, potentially taken from one of two popular songs with which she became identified, "Ko Ko Ri Ko," and "Qui qua vu Coco."

Chanel spent almost two years around her work place in which she took upon her now well-known name of Coco. It was around when she was 20 when her real foray in to fashion took place. Etienne Balsan, Chanels lover then, offered to help her start a millinery business in Paris. Shortly after, Chanel left Balsan for one of his friends, Arthur "Boy" Capel. Both men played incredibly large parts within Chanels first steps in her fashion career.

In 1910, Chanel opened her first shop. Originally, it was a store for hats. As years progressed, Chanel added stores in Deauville and Biarritz; it was then she began to make clothes. Chanels first taste of success came from her own design, an old jersey fashioned in to a dress. People liked it in such a way; they chased her up after who designed it. It was offers of making other dresses for those whom enquired about it which eventually launched Chanels true fashion venture.

Thanks to Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel, women like Vivenne Westwood have been able to take fashion by storm, and create something completely new. Unlike Chanel, however, Westwoods like seemed to be set. Her marriage was going well, she had a son, and she was a teacher. However, things went a little awry when Westwoods first marriage dissolved and she met Malcolm Mclaren. Mclaren was an art student and future manager of The Sex Pistols. It was then Westwood had begun making jewellery as a hobby, supporting herself and her two children through her hobby, along with Mclaren. Mclaren was Westwoods driving force, her opening in to a world of new ideas.

In 1971, Mclaren opened a boutique shop at 430 Kings Road in London. Westwoods designs took central places within it; despite a string of different names, the shop would always feature Westwoods designs. Westwood, when Mclaren became manager of The Sex Pistols, was their official design and clothing designer. The Sex Pistols look was created with thanks to Westwood. As punk faded, Westwood could have been left out of loops and without a hope. However, her previous years of influential work proved in her favour, even today Westwood is still one woman whom is among those most forward thinking fashion designers, often influencing and guiding fashion choices even now.
