Fancy Dress Etiquette

Fancy Dress Parties, love them or hate them the chances are that everyone has been at least one in their lives

. Whether you enjoyed it or not, you probably followed some degree of fancy dress etiquette without even knowing about it. Until now that is, believe it or not there are rules of conduct for a themed costume party:

Rule 1: You MUST turn up in fancy dress if invited to such a party. Under no circumstances just turn up in your normal clothes unless you want to be stared at and generally frowned upon by other, wackily dressed partygoers. It's always worth checking that you are going to a costume party to avoid the other ultimate faux pas; being the only person turning up in fancy dress to a normal, civilian dressed party.

Rule 2: The costume must be either a quality fancy costume of the highest standard or a hastily thrown together home-made effort that looks awful. You should never aim for the middle ground. You will just give the impression that you either got bored halfway through dressing up or couldn't afford to finish your costume. So aim high, but affordable. Or aim low and cheap.

Rule 3: When dressing up try and think practically, Avoid full head masks or anything that covers your mouth or eyes. This way you'll solve a multitude of problems; you won't get as hot, you'll be able to eat and drink easily and most importantly, you'll be able to chat.

Rule 4: Once at the party try and work out if there are double costumes in the room. You don't want a situation where you're getting on well with a Gorilla costume only to discover that there's another Gorilla in the room. If faced with a multiple gorilla (or other costume) situation, try and notice some differences between them before you get too drunk. This will help you later on to avoid awkward scenarios, especially if one of the multiple costumes is of the opposite sex.

Rule 5: If you're making the effort to dress up, be prepared to act your role. The only thing that's frowned upon more than not making an effort is someone that's half-heartedly entering in the spirit of things. If you are dressed as a pirate you should pretend to be a pirate at least twice during the whole evening. Don't overdo it, A few costume appropriate noises will be fine. No one wants a method actor living their costume all night.

By following these simple rules you will guarantee a great night out at a fancy dress party! Unless you're gatecrashing of course...
