Fashion then and now

What's the difference between fashionable items back in the day compared to today?

Ladies handbags

Back then:

In prehistoric times there was no reason to make a statement about who you were with your handbag no one cared - you simply needed a place to put the animal entrails you were carrying home for supper. Sure, one or two fashion forward individuals may have decorated their leather pouches with teeth or flowers but generally, the handbag was nothing more than a tool for survival. Men actually used to carry around the earliest known handbags, but they were called pockets' at the time. The small sacks were hung by thongs from the back of the pants but quickly went out of fashion as thieves became good at slicing the bags open from behind and stealing the contents.

Today:

Besides the fact that your handbag does make a statement about who you are these days and that people really do care not much has changed. We still use them to carry around essentials BlackBerries, iPods and lip gloss. They're still made out of animal skin but now they're dyed and sometimes boast a status symbol, like LV, which signifies the most coveted animal skin in the world. And although women predominantly carry them now, man-bags' are definitely making a comeback among the fashion conscious male species - the ever fashionable gay man has been rocking them for years of course. Finally, the age-old bag-thief profession is still as popular as ever the only difference now is that a thief will think twice about cutting a Louis Vuitton.

Shoes

Back then:

According to some toe bones found in China, shoe fetishes started about 40 000 years ago. Scientists were able to tell this by the way the middle toe was formed on an old skeleton as apparently the middle toe changes shape over a course of time when shoes are worn often. Back in the day, you couldn't buy shoes or order them online obviously, they were only made according to need and one pair would be worn with everything. Shoes were made from reed mats and animal skins and fastened to the foot with leather thongs, in colder climates they gave extra warmth and in warmer areas they simply protected the feet against sharp stones. The Egyptians were among the first shoe makers of the world and created different styles for different individuals, which paved the way for fashionable foot wear.

Today:

Shoes are still simply strips of leather fastened to the foot well sort of. Now they have comfortable inners, laces, buckles and about a billion different designs which we don't need at all. but the general idea remains exactly the same. The only difference between shoes back in the day and shoes now is that now they aren't optional unless you're a hippy or an unemployed bum. Also, the distinction between male and female footwear is quite obvious, where it never used to be.

It's interesting to see how the most lavish and expensive fashion accessories we have today evolved from their simple beginnings as functional tools to make our lives easier. A sack of skin worn on the belt of a man has evolved into the billion dollar industry that is ladies handbags amazing!
