Fashion through the decades

A lot of the readers have been asking for more fashion tips and trends so here is an update.

Every season unleashes a flood of new clothes. It's a tradition. It's not only due to the change in climate. It's also that people are tired of the same old clothes they've worn for weeks or months: they're ready for something new a different shape, a fresh color, a new attitude.

Right now, the stakes are higher than usual. There's not only a new season ahead spring but a new year. Spring used to mean a flowered hat, a crispy tailored suit, a new pair of shoes. But that was long ago. Today's fashion does not mean that you have to throw the old stuff out, start anew. That's really old fashioned.

If you opted for something sparkly and glittery for parties, you can go on wearing it for the rest of the month. It's still winter. If you'd like something different, check the sales store and the internet. You could get a bargain or two.

For regular daytime wear, your sweaters, T's , jeans and pants will do just fine. After all, the casual wave is still going strong. Look at the American sportswear designers who are making it in Paris, including Marc Jacobs, who's reviving Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors, who's giving new life to Celine. They each have their own American collections too.

There are changes of course, but these are not on a grand scale. Handbags rank high, especially the sausage-like "Baguette" by Fendi that has spawned a myriad of imitations. And glittery small evening bags add a bit 1920's chic.

A touch of fur is not amiss: a collar, a scarf, even a handbag. And snakeskin, in pants, or a jacket, has a lot of admirers.

Many new clothes are fitted closer to the body, including suit jackets. See if you can remove the shoulder pads from you favorite jacket. Sometimes it works just fine. Don't pile blouses with pads and sweaters with pads together: it's too bulky.

Slimmer looks mean more attention to the body. If you've kept up your exercises, you'll be able to face the swimsuit season without any qualms. Skirts and pants worn at hip level are still going strong. That means a bit of midriff will show.

Necklines that plunge are one of the latest fashion trends in America. Just look at any pictures of a Hollywood star in her latest evening dress!

Don't worry about hem length. Wear what you like. Anything goes. And if your legs can take it, you can even wear a skirt with a slit.

If it's a little more excitement you crave, consider some jewelry. Nothing inconspicuous. A wide cuff bracelet is a good idea or a chunky necklace.

What about designer names? There are plenty of them, and each one seems to have a special vision. For wild invention, there are Alexander McQueen and John Galliano of Givenchy and Dior respectively. They have plenty of idea, but they are exorbitantly expensive and not necessarily for the working girl. Bill Blass has retired and Yves Saint Laurent will not design ready to wear any more. But don't worry: there are plenty of aspirants. In America, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karen are the pace setters.

But never mind the designer names. Try on the clothes that appeal to you. It takes concentration and awareness of you own taste. But there's no world-shaking trend on the horizon. It's really up to you. And that's not a bad thing.
