Feminine Oddities Spice Up the Los Angeles Art Scene
Artist, actress, and visual experience Debra Haden is never lacking in creativity. Upon her arrival six years ago to Los Angeles an artistic display occurred that she named "Feminine Oddities". Feminine Oddities first took form as a line of paintings. The raven haired, whimsical beauties appeared shut-eyed and fabulous on each canvas. And anyone that views them will witness a bit more than just a beautiful visual. You will be inspired to feel gorgeous light, and feminine power.
I had a chance to speak with Laurie J. Butler a Feminine Oddities collector and she had this to say about Haden's work, "I first encountered the amazing work of Debra Haden at the Hive Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, California. The exciting painting of a black and white attired woman with the wondrous hair flowing around her made me feel so good about being a woman. The sexy, strong and gutsy qualities of Debra's work fill me with fun and pride at being a lady who likes to look good. Every day as I go to work as a litigation attorney, I raise a high 5 to my pretty lady painting from Debra."
Haden was recently contracted to do a commissioned painting for an Oncologist's office. Debra veered off of the feminine theme and opted for a more universal theme at the request of the buyer. Haden painted a figure that could be masculine or feminine.
Dr. Ahrin Koppel is also a collector of Haden's work and said "I wanted a piece created by Debra because her art tells the story of emotion. For most people, cancer is the biggest challenge they have ever faced. It's a challenge filled with emotion. I was hoping to display a piece of art that would channel hope and healing rather than despair. The painting portrays an image of courage and self-confidence, the perfect elements for coping with cancer."
Another aspect of Feminine Oddities is performance art. Haden has pulled together groups of women to perform, as well as solo performances. Dance, burlesque, improvisation, acting and comedy have been featured in the various performances. "I try to give a different experience every time I perform. This can make it a challenge when many times you see artists and performers repeat the same act over and over again." Haden said.
I recently watched a Feminine Oddities performance at Trophallaxis at The Hive gallery. This Kansas raised sweetheart is a gentle soul when you meet her but, something unexpected happens the second she is on stage. Haden moves from the heart. And you could feel her presence, strength and confidence fill the air as everyone flocked full of curiosity to the performance room once she began.
The Little Red Writer host of the event said, "Debra's performance is the cherry top on the top-hat's tip. Of course hers is morbidly catwalk savvy and coy, bedecked with beaded trim and bursting black tulle. Using a power that exceeds her petite five foot frame, she demurely hypnotizes and commands all attention with her flirtatiously effervescent choreography. When she gets on stage, get ready for your wandering eyes balls to fixate and bulge. Her burlesque is artfully freakish and refreshing; a sassy bustier lampoon that will leave you tickled curious and feverish."
When I asked Haden what is next for the oddities she replied "Ventriloquism. I have always had a natural ability." From everything I have seen Haden produce the last few years, I can't wait.
