Fibromyalgia Syndrome
Fibromyalgia is a health disorder that causes muscle and ligament pain
, as well as fatigue, sleep problems, depression, and inability to think clearly. It is an illness that has no known cause, and does not have a definite and established cure to date.
People who suffer from fibromyalgia experience pain more intensely than those who do not have the condition. Muscles and ligaments located in the neck, shoulders, back, and hip areas are the ones most susceptible to extreme pain for a person who has this ailment. The pain is usually most severe in the morning, and is similar to symptoms of the flu. The kind of pain that fibromyalgia brings is usually described as a burning, throbbing, or stabbing sensation.
Another symptom that is associated with fibromyalgia is fatigue. For one who has this illness, even the lightest physical activity can cause fatigue which can range from mild to incapacitating. One could feel exhausted and weak for several days, and no amount of sleep or rest could relieve or even alleviate this feeling of tiredness brought about by this disease. In worst cases, some people would feel too weak to even do simple things such as walking, household chores, or even hold a book for a few minutes.
Fibromyalgia also causes fibrofog - a mental haziness that is characterized by the inability to concentrate, memory loss, and even depression. It is a devastating fact that this sickness causes to people to forget precious memories and lose the ability to think clearly- a deterioration of a once sharp and alert brain.
Though there is no cure for fibromyalgia, there have been some home treatment methods that have been proven to ease some of its symptoms. Regular, light exercise is the most important therapy for muscle pain. Exercising three times a week using low impact exercises such as swimming, walking, and biking keeps the muscles healthy and conditioned and lessens the amount of discomfort and pain caused by fibromyalgia. This can also do wonders in boosting energy levels and helps regulate proper sleeping habits.
Heat compress applied on the aching muscles can also alleviate pain, as well as stretching exercises and massage. Relaxation techniques have also been found to lessen pain and decrease the number of tender points of a person who has fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a debilitating disease that may seem to be the end of the road, but there are ways to fight it. Researchers are constantly revealing new facts about this disorder, and providing ways to suppress, if not totally abolish its effects.
