Fidelity- is it still alive?
Just listen in on some conversations between young people and you tend to believe the opposite. To be faithful to to your partner doesn't seem to be the standard anymore, but often things are not what they seem. The answer to the question whether someone should be faithful, also before marriage, seems to depend largely of the company one keeps. Why do engagement- and marriage rings still exist?
Machos
Some men are inclined to boast their sexual escapades when they're among friends, even men who are married. The kind of company is crucial here. When they spend an evening with a befriended couple, these men engage in polite conversation, without even dropping a hint about any escapades. The question arises whether there's any truth in these stories. That detracts nothing from the unifying function they have.
Girls
The way girls' talk about being faithful or not doesn't differ very much from the male variant. To their closest friends they might tell the truth abour their relationship (with their spouses or boyfriends), in a larger group they display the exact same behavior that is met with disapproval in men. Detailed stories and fantasies are not uncommon, with a female leading part of course. Girl power?
Culture
In our western society it is no longer a taboo to have loose morals. Still, many people have trouble accepting infidelity. Because of the extensive period of love exploration' built into our culture, the promise of faithfulness to a partner is a statement that is not taken lightly.
Peer pressure
Making a commitment like that by a person who is unfaithfully inclined can be triggered by peer pressure or religion too. In that case the promise has little or no value, but the peer pressure might be just enough to prevent the actual infidelity. That makes the question whether fidelity is still alive a rather blunt one. We know the answer should be yes'. But how many of us truly believe there's a real separation between true' love and the urge to be unfaithful?
In that case the promise has little or no value, but the peer pressure might be just enough to prevent the actual infidelity.
