Finch Cages - All That You Really Need To Know
Creating the Right Environment With Your Finch Cages
The quality and cleanliness of finch cages will ultimately dictate the health and happiness of your pets. Finches are interesting, full of life and cheerful but their energetic and fun personalities will diminish in the wrong environment. Also, although they are extremely hardy and an ideal choice for anyone who has never cared for birds before, they cannot be healthy if their home is dirty. Finch cages must be kept clean at all times.
Sizing
Since not everyone can have an aviary in their home, finch cages are the practical alternative. These birds may be small but they are active and like any other breathing creature, they need exercise to maintain premium health. Finch cages need to be a minimum of two and a half feet long so they can take short flights but the bigger the better. Preferred material choices are wood or metal, never brass because it is toxic and spacing between rails should be no more than half of an inch to prevent injury or escape. It is also a good idea to have a spare cage to use when you are cleaning their primary one out.
Accessories
Finch cages are not complete without a few essential and beneficial accessories, such as:
Food and Water Dishes Containers for fresh water and food must be provided at all times as well as a small container with grit for them to eat to help with digestion. Treats may be given in small dishes but remove these if perishable food is left uneaten so it doesn't spoil.
Grooming A shallow dish, not more than an inch deep should be placed in the cage several times per week for bathing purposes. This dish should only be filled with a half inch of water or they can easily drown when their feathers are wet.
Perches Finch cages mush have perches for the birds to rest on. Cement perches are great to help keep their sharp nails trimmed but they can be really hard on their feet after awhile so they should not be used exclusively. Natural perches made from elm, poplar, maple, pear or cherry trees will be appreciated by your pets.
Toys While there should be toys in finch cages, be careful not to overdo it. Too many items will interfere with them being able to fly and exercise. Usually one mirror placed near a perch as well as one to two toys per finch is adequate. Some preferred choices are swings, ladders, bells or other shiny and noisy objects. It is nice to change the toy selection in finch cages from time to time to the birds don't get bored.
Other Some finches will enjoy sleeping in a nest box, others will ignore it. Also, some people attach bird protector disks to their finch cages to prevent mites, but this is not a necessity.
Cleaning
Finch cages should be wiped out on the bottom daily. To ease your workload, you can line the bottom with newspaper, brown paper bags or paper towels so then you simply need to pull it out and replace. Also, the entire cage needs to be washed weekly, this includes removing and cleaning all toys as well!
Hot soapy water created with a mild detergent is a great choice for washing finch cages and always rinse thoroughly to be sure that there is no residue left behind. Harsh chemicals should never be used! Maintaining the cleanliness of the environment is the most important step to keeping your finch healthy and happy.
