The 2nd largest city in Spain, Barcelona is recommended for a trip simply for the exciting ambiance and talent to gratify all kinds of visitors. A usual day can involve walking about the Roman remains, a trip to Can Paixano for the delicious cava, and venturing out on a picturesque walking route in the surrounding area.
Barcelona's painters and sculptors are instrumental in providing the city with a superiority not found in other cities in the appearance of its amazing architecture and countless museums. Both Tapies and Picasso have whole museums showing their works alone which would literally take you a month or so to get around and completely appreciate. From the bottom of La Ramblas down to the old port of Barcelona and up to Placa Catalunya it would take a whole day to discover the delights of the Barri Gothic Quarter, and that's not even seeing any other part of the city! The cobbled streets make the perfect places to stroll through as they wind merrily between old buildings before opening out onto quaint squares where you'll find plenty of little coffee houses and cafes to sit and rest awhile whilst watching the crowds go by.
The Sagrada Familia is a sight to behold, initially conceived by the Catalan publisher, Joseph Bocabella, who founded the Association of Saint Joseph Devout with the aim of building such a temple, this epic task eventually fell into the hands of Gaudi when he was just 31. Any architectural trip has to start here or at least with one of Antoni Gaudi's creations as he is viewed as the best Catalan architect there ever was.
If you are a serious enthusiast of architecture, whether old or modern, then visit the city in November when the World Architecture Festival is on. Distinguished architects from around the world showcase their groundbreaking designs in the hope of winning Building of the Year Award, and at the same time they mingle with principal representatives from other countries whilst sharing ideas on inspiring designs.
The O'Gehry fish sculpture is a remarkable size as it measures 35m by 54m. Created in a mixture of stone, steel and glass, you can't fail to spot it as it sparkles and shines and changes colour in the sunshine. There are lots of other modern architectural treasures in the area if you want a closer look, don't miss the relaxing and quiet grounds of Can Framis Museum, the unique facade of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, and not forgetting the iconic Agbar Tower looming at the gateway of the technological district.
Barcelona is a city that doesn't like to sleep and there's not much going on before the midnight hours. Bars are often empty until 2am onwards and then there's plenty of after party bars that stay open until the morning. Although they're not officially clubs you can choose to chill out or party on in them depending on how you're feeling at the time. There is a huge number of live music sessions, with people getting together to jam, play jazz or the blues, or watch the flamenco acts, then onto another club!
The Las Ramblas area in particular has more than its fair share of dance places though none get busy until 2 or 3am before starting to close from 5am onwards. But never despair in Barcelona as you can still carry on partying if you really want to, just watch out for the crew handing out flyers for more late clubs. Get some shut-eye back at your apartment or hotel and you'll be ready to start all over again. Of course there is no shortage of traditional Spanish bars if you prefer local pubs, they may be full of locals gossiping and playing cards but at least you'll have relief from loud music and drunken behaviour.
A short break doesn't have to mean a city destination however; there are loads of other choices available to you. Take advantage of the free time in a new place to relax, rejuvenate and recharge your batteries, maybe a few days at the seaside will suit you better or a weekend in the countryside exploring the hills and forests. There are some real bargains to be found if you want a last minute getaway, staying in serviced apartments in Barcelona provides you with all the latest mod cons as well as space and privacy, dining areas, and fully equipped kitchens. Most places provide a home from home with bed linen, a fridge, basic kitchenettes, satellite TV and WIFI internet access.
