? If you are, then keep reading. You will definitely read some things that many network marketing companies would prefer you not know about, but the news is not all negative.

The internet has created some positive changes for the network marketing industry. It used to be that only people with certain types of personalities could succeed in MLM. You had to have really thick skin, not mind rejection, and be willing to pester everyone you came in contact with, about how great your opportunity is.

Online, you can target individuals who are already actively searching for a product or opportunity like yours. In fact, they will contact you and ask you to provide them with information. It's the exact opposite of how it used to be.

So the good news is it is not nearly as difficult to try to make money with MLM as it used to be. The bad news is that most people still fail at it. This is not to say you will fail. MLM has always been a field that created some millionaires and that has not changed. However, it is the rare exception that makes it big.

The worst part about this is, in many instances, MLM companies are designed that way. This is not to say that all network marketing companies are like this, but in many cases, the failure of a lot of people can translate into the success of a few. Depending on the pay plan, if a heavy hitter is able to convince hundreds of people to join under her, she can make a ton of money for herself and for the owners, even if there is no duplication beyond her immediate referrals.

Network marketing pay plans are matrices that extend several layers deep. The idea is, anyone can make money from the purchasing volume of everyone on their team, up to several levels below. The charts often show how, if everyone simply refers 3 people, who in turn refer 3 people, they can fill their matrix and achieve financial freedom.

Here's a news flash: That doesn't happen. It is difficult enough to become adept at enrolling others into taking on a monthly commitment. Even if you learn to do that, you'll get frustrated because your referrals will not refer others. If there are any that are exceptions, they are going to experience the same frustration.

This is not to say you should never join an MLM opportunity. Just don't think that it's easy to make a lot of money. If you come across a company that has a product you love and would buy it anyway, and if it is priced competitively, you might want to join. If you only have to spend $50 a month, or so, for your own personal consumption, you might be able to grow a situation like that into monthly residual income. Be prepared for it to take years and don't be disappointed if it is not a lot of money.

What top MLM companies do not tell you is, to be on the look out for companies that are set up for breakage. As discussed above, that means, their pay plan favors the heavy hitters and the owners. The way to spot them is they have a one time fee for joining that is split between the member that refers you and the company owner. It can cost hundreds of dollars. You will find it virtually impossible to recruit anyone if they have to pay that kind of money up front, so eventually, you will break off, or quit -- but only after having served your purpose.
