Find Out Why Drug Abuse Is Associated With Hiv

HIV or the human papilloma virus is one of the most feared types of disease in the world today

. This is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). There's still no known cure for AIDS up to this present-day. The number of people who contracted this disease rose tremendously from 8 million in 1990 to 34 million in 2010. The figures are alarming and greater efforts are being carried out to prevent contracting the disease. Finding the treatment for AIDS is underway similar to finding a cure for cancers.

In the US, there are about 1.2 million people living with HIV and around 1/5th of these people are not aware of their infection which makes them more dangerous in causing a spread of the virus. Vulnerable groups who are found to have HIV are men who have sex with other men, hemophiliacs and drug addicts who use injections. One good reason that these individuals contract the disease is that this virus can only be transmitted through sexual contact and blood transfusion. When an individual had sex with another who has the virus, it's expected that the individual will get the particular disease. Drug users who share needles during drug sessions acquire the virus if one of the users has HIV. Hemophiliacs have greater chances of getting the disease because blood transfusions can sometimes include infected blood.

The cases of individuals acquiring AIDS due to drug injections are still high although it is lesser compared in the 1990's. Sharing of needles during recreational drug sessions pose higher chances of acquiring HIV. There are drug treatment programs that offer personalized treatment on cases which involve AIDS. Drug abuse patients go through assessment that also includes laboratory tests to determine other possible conditions that may be present in the patient. Therapy for this complex problem is different from other types of drug abuse cases. The problem with HIV is that there is no treatment for this kind of disease yet. The patient however can be helped in overcoming his addiction and helping him avoid contracting other diseases since his immune system is lowered due to the HIV.

Recreational drug users specially those who share needles are not aware of possible diseases that their associates have. If one of these users have HIV, the rest of the group will likely have the virus. Information campaign against drug addiction also includes awareness of AIDS. Drug treatment centers that don't address this complex problem refer patients to other larger facilities so that they'll be able to overcome the addiction and deal much better with their disease.
