Find Some Common Ground
In order to get someone to buy my car I always try and find some common ground with the potential buyer. These can be little things like finding out whether or not the buyer has children, what school they may go to and places that they have been on vacation. I find that if I can relate to the buyer somehow, the greater the likelihood of them enjoying my company and then they will buy my car. If the buyer can't find any reason to bond with you then you are just another person to them. Humanise yourself to the buyer.
The more the buyer likes or identifies with you, the worse they will feel when they let you down by not buying off you. In order to ensure someone will buy my car I will even go out of my way to find things I like about the buyer. Compliment them, offer them a drink and converse with them. Let them see you care about them as a person and you are not just after a quick sale. Now is not the time to be shy. If you come across timid and like you have something to hide then they will wonder what you are hiding. They don't know you except through the sale of the car. They can't tell if it is just your nature to be timid.
I am normally a timid person. When it comes time to get someone to buy my car I come out of my shell. My wife hardly recognises me when I am in buy my car mode. It is not hard to relate to someone, you can find common ground with anyone if you look hard enough. You don't have to relate to them about every aspect of their life; just one or two things. It can be something as trivial as enjoying a particular sport or using the same brand of razors. However, it is important to not work this angle to death. Don't go overboard on describing what might appeal to you with the common ground. It may well be common ground they don't wish to discuss. Watch for subtle cues in their body language or speech if you are ever unsure whether or not you are on the right track.
