When planning a trip to Europe or abroad, travelers often go to the web to find cheap flights

. However, with the barrage of online travel sites, articles, blogs, and recommendations, how do you know you are getting the best deal? Here are four easy steps to follow to get the lowest airline tickets:

1) Start with an Aggregator

An aggregator is basically a search engine except for travel. It will compile the fares for your request and provide you a summary of the best and cheapest options. This will get you a good idea of the going rate, but does not mean it is the best rate. Popular aggregator sites are Kayak and Booking Wiz.

2) Check Consolidators

Aggregators often miss out on consolidators since they are often restricted from submitting their fares to aggregator sites so you must check consolidators. A popular consolidator site is Flights.com which by the way also has an aggregator feature.

3) Check the Airline Site Directly

Once you find the cheapest airline ticket, check the airline site directly. Sometimes they offer sales that are only book able directly with them and you usually avoid a service fee.

4) Consider Alternate Routes, Dates, Times & Re-check

Alternate routes often have big price differences. For example considering a trip to New York? New York has 3 airports all basically surrounding Manhattan; JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. Most large cities usually have more then one airport. Now did you consider changing your dates? Not traveling on the weekends and staying more then 2 nights often saves you big bucks. Also, it is usually cheaper if you leave at say 6AM on a Friday vs. 6PM. Finally, be sure to re-check your fare. Seat inventory changes daily and new inventory comes up Tuesday night. Even if you booked, sale might come to the market where you may be able to get a refund for the fare difference.
