Finding The Origins Of Tin
The use of tin dates back to the Bronze Age around the year 3000 BC
. Around this time tin and arsenic were common ingredients in the bronze that people used to make a variety of objects.
Bronze varied according to the amount of tin that was incorporated into the recipe. Many of the beginning bronze items had 2% or less of tin or arsenic in them.
As a result, many scientists believe that the tin or arsenic was accidentally incorporated into the recipe. However, eventually it was intentionally added.
The tin or arsenic added to copper increased the hardness of the metal and allowed casting to become much easier. As metal became a major part of life, civilization left the Copper Age and entered the Bronze Age.
The first time that scientists know of concerning the use of tin was in the Near East or Balkan area around 3000 BC. After examining the nearby area it is still unclear how the tin was obtained.
The availability of tin was very low, with no known early tin mining sites and very few deposits. The earliest known mining site of tin is in Erzegebirge, Europe.
Erzegebirge is located near the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. The tin mine located here dates back to 2500 BC.
Due to the fact that tin was rare, it was brought from this mine to be traded around the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. As tin began to spread through trade, knowledge of how to work metal to using tin also spread.
Shortly after, several other mines were opened around 2000 BC. Mines opened in Brittany, Devon and Cornwall, and the Iberian Peninsula.
The mines grew throughout the time period of the Romans, particularly under Roman control. The demand for tin grew and created a new thriving trading market.
Iberia's and Germany's tin production declined before the beginning of the medieval period. However, Devon and Cornwall tin dominated the market and flourished.
By the three to two thousand years before the coming of Christ, the deposits of tin in Yunnan province and those stretching up to the Malaysian Peninsula were not mined until around 700 BC.
During the Han Dynasty the primary source of tin came from China. In Africa, America, and Australia tin was not exploited until much later.
By 1931, tin miners created the International Tin Committee. In 1956 this committee became the International Tin Council.
This organization helped to regulate the tine council. Tin markets never truly recovered from the collapse of the markets in 1985, where the price of tin was cut in half.
Today, tin is often mistaken as the silver metal sheets. Tin is often used to cover items such as aluminum foil, beverage cans, corrugated building sheathing and tin cans.
These things are made out of steel or aluminum. The Ford's toy car, the "Tin Lizzy," was also improperly named.
Even though the known deposits of tin were fairly rare at the time when tin was being developed, it is the 49th most abundant element that can be found on the Earth's crust. However, in comparison with many of the other elements tin is still considered to be rare.
Zinc is estimated to be 75ppm with copper at 50 ppm, but tin is only estimated to have 2ppm. This is partly due to the fact that tin is not naturally occurring.
Tin has to be taken out of a base compound. This base compound is usually cassiterite.
Small amounts of tin can also be found in many sulfides. Tin contains a higher specific gravity of tin and resistance to corrosion.
This resistance to corrosion is invaluable. Tin can also be found in undersea location because it is deposited in rivers and washed downstream.
Dredging these streams is the primary way of mining tin. Tin has a very long and vital role in the history of mankind.
