Fire Safes - What Are They Really Used For?

Would you like to have the peace of mind that your money

, collectibles, irreplaceable documents, family photos and your other important items will be safe in the event of a fire in your home? Then you should consider buying an affordable fire safe.

Fire resistant safes are good for storing jewelry, important media files, back up discs and documents. When you purchase a fireproof safe essentially you will be buying time. And you will buy a considerable amount of time if there's a fire. On the other hand, because the primary focus of a fire safe is to protect its contents from heat, you will often buy only a small amount of time against theft.

One of the benefits of buying a fire safe is that it is very affordable. You can buy a safe for less than two hundred dollars that will protect your documents for up to an hour if it's UL rated for 1850 degrees. If you think that an hour doesn't sound like an awful lot of time, then you might want to consider that the average home fire burns for about a quarter of an hour to a half hour before it's brought under control by the fire department.

Fire safes are engineered to keep the internal temperature of the safe under 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature that paper can start to char. Often one of these safe's protective devices is the ability to create steam inside the safe.

Fire proof safes often come with a combination dial lock, an anchoring hole in the bottom, and bolting hardware. Some come with an easily programmed electronic keypad in lieu of a dial lock.

Although some fire safes are designed to protect your firearms and other valuables, many were built with other purposes in mind. In other words, if you're concerned about burglary or protecting your firearms you will want a safe designed to fit those needs. However, fire proof safes do have a definite value.

Rather than being optimized against burglary, most fire safes are mostly used to protect documents. Because they're designed to protect the safe's contents against high temperatures, most of the materials used in the construction of a fire safe are both incombustible and non conductive of heat.

A thin layer of sheet rock doesn't make a safe really fire proof. Some of the materials used in the safe's construction are diatomaceous earth, vermiculite mica, Portland cement, wood chips, and gypsum. Some companies use combinations of these materials.
