Liposuction May Make You Look Great, But What Can It Do To You Emotionally?
It's a great idea, isn't it? You go into surgery with excessive fat on your body
, and you come out thinner and happier. Although the idea of liposuction is fabulous, there are sometimes emotional implications you might not think of in advance. How will your friends react? Will there be negative reactions from family and spouse? Will there be difficulty in coping with the changes?
Humans are largely visual creatures, and as such, they will react when something visually changes, including another person's body. A lot of the attention that comes from looking thinner is positive. The modern American standard of beauty has been shrinking. Not so many years ago, famous actresses could be size 16 and considered to be at the peak of perfection. Somehow that size has shrunk to size 2 today.
Liposuction (also known as lipoplasty) can help some people to get just a little closer to this ideal. (Although it should be mentioned that lipoplasty can only safely remove small amounts of fat.) It sounds wonderful to have a body that has been trimmed down, but sometimes the reactions of others can be negative.
Who would be upset about someone trimming off a little weight? Why?
With so much of an emphasis on image in society today, some people will be jealous that the person has gotten to look so good. Others feel insulted that someone would get surgery to change something that they have no problem with themselves. This can especially be true of spouses who like the other just as they are and can't help feeling scandalized by the other's new body.
Getting liposuction can be an adjustment in other ways as well. Having scars can make some feel embarrassed. Some people try to keep it a secret that they have had the procedure done. This is more commonly the case for men, who tend to feel ashamed and worry that others will view them as less masculine for having the surgery. Both men and women sometimes experience guilt, wondering if they deserve to look the way they do.
All of these reactions are normal. Change is always hard in one way or another. Lipoplasty does have a lot of benefits, not the least of which is the improved confidence that can come from a better self image. But like all forms of change, it can bring with it some emotional difficulties. Understanding that before getting the surgery can help patients cope once the surgery is over.
