Firozabad, a city in Indias northern state of Uttar Pradesh is famed for its glass-making industry

. Originally known as Chandwar Nager in years past, the city was founded by a Muslim Tughluq king, Firuz Shah Tughluq. Even in these early days, the town was noted for its bangle and glass manufacturing specialty.

The glass making industry has ancient roots. Invaders and travelers coming to India brought various glass objects with them. Those which were deemed to be of no value were gathered and melted down in the towns furnaces; this was the origin of Firozabads glass industry. These furnaces of the traditional type which use wood as fuel are still in operation in the region.

In ancient times manufacturing was limited to bangles and small bottles. Only one bangle could be made at a time; these simple trinkets were very basic, without any joints.

In later years, production increased and diversified to encompass coloured as well as white pieces of glass created to assemble objects such as chandeliers for a clientele that included nobles and royalty who purchased these artistic masterpieces to adorn their palaces. Later production expanded to include phials and miniature bottles used for storing perfumes and other cosmetics. Production volumes increased steadily as the glass products found favour with the wider public. In recent years new techniques have been introduced to create attractive glass items in different shades and hues.

Today items created in and around Firozabad include glasses, candle stands, jars, flower vases, and electrical items such as bulbs and ornamental lights in addition to many other items. Some of these creations are elaborately painted and embellished with intricate patterns; etching and other decorations are also done.
