Fitness in both body and mind is essential for important senior years. I know from first hand. I retired 16 years ago at age 65. I dragged around 195 pounds on my five'8" frame, and I mean draged around.
My working standard of living for the past forty years had been hectic, with all types of tight plans, meetings and deadlines. The huge-company division I managed was liable for conferences we made all through the the country. That made the work not only heavy with liabilities, but for the reason that we had the conferences at resort inns, my eating and drinking inclinations were in addition heavy. Did I mention expense account?
My helper, a hard-working man about my age and weight, was responsible for nearly all of the conference on-site duties at the inns ... checking in delegates and their families, superintending foods and setting up social events. As if his 15-hour-day schedule weren't enough, he served as bartender and piano player at night in the executive suite for the VIPs. After one specifically tough meeting, he went home, collapsed and died. He was fifty five.
When I retired, I was well on my way of doing the same. Though, as soon as I moved from the cold east to the hot desert, I set up a daily workout and diet plan. I didn't go for any of the large commercial routines, however just ... finally ... utilized common sense. Still working out daily at virtually age eighty two, I am able to suggest it to any senior.
First, lose the butt. It took about five years, but I knocked off 30 pounds, and for the past decade, I've weighed in at around 165. My doctors are glad, though I am trying to get down to my 1943 post-boot camp Navy weight of one hundred fifty five. Incidentally, I do check recurrently with my family physician and a heart specialist about diet and exercise.
I eat far less compared to the volume and kinds of meal I scarfed down when I was working. I don't count calories, but take much smaller portions, stay afar from fatty meats, and possibly sneak in one or maybe 2 desserts a seven days. For between-meal snacks, it is strictly fresh fruits and vegetables. I never smoked, and except for attempting to be a post-boot camp boozer at age eighteen, I drink only an accidental glass of wine.
I believe activity is the key to fitness in seniors. Surely, some of us couldn't do all the full-body workouts we once did, though it is important to do as much physical workout daily as we can manage. I swim 40 laps a day in an Olympic-length pool, over and above warming-up workouts for quarter-hour in the pool spa. I hike two times a 7 days, covering a total of 5 miles. I do not belong to a fitness club, nor use any of the exotic machinery. I just do it.
Together with physical activity, a healthy senior should in addition hold an active mind. I pound my computer for from 2 to six hours a day, several of it for pay and some as a volunteer at a community center. I attend enlightening, social and gab sessions at the center. I conduct all-embracing correspondence with household, pals.
My key to making it that far is to hold both active mind and body moving forward. After all, when you think about it, what different option is there if you want to hang around a bit longer compared to data state you have to?
