Five Challenges To Making Money On The Internet

Amazingly, there are still people who believe that on the internet

, if you build it, they will come. Maybe it has to do with media presentations of every website, video, and dating profile going viral only slightly faster than it takes to actually upload the file, and every search query instantly coming back with perfectly relevant results with absolutely no clutter or competition. In any event, the truth is that starting an online business is a challenge. Once you get a website up, there are five things it has to be capable of to make your business a success:

Getting the Customer to the Website.

If you build it, they don't care! People don't open a web browser and magically start streaming to the latest sales sites. Your first challenge, once your website is up, is to actually get people to go there. Pay Per Click is a solid tactic for immediate results, but can be costly. Cheap SEO has better value, but can take longer. Ads on related sites can be fairly cheap, but the quality of the clicks is questionable. Whatever the case, you need to think about how you are actually going to get customers to see your new site...or they won't.

Getting the Customer to READ the Website.

Okay, so you have spent a few months on cheap SEO and you are on page one of Google for some good niche terms. People are streaming into your site...and streaming right on out. Once someone arrives at your site, the question becomes, how do you get them to pay attention to it. You have great information, but unless you do something to catch their attention, the visitors will click right out. Custom website design with professional graphics is a good option. Videos are solid too. Clear headers, well-written text, and user-friendly navigation all can help tremendously. Remember, when people come to your site from a search engine, they are generally interested in what they were looking for - your job is to convince them that you are the resource to go to for just that.

Convincing the Customer that it wants Your Product.

So now that you've attracted the customer's attention, you need to let them know why they want what you are offering. Fortunately, online businesses tend to have an advantage here! Someone who clicks their site while searching for their product probably already knows it wants your product. If you know you are dealing with people searching for your product, then, this information is probably best placed on a separate page where it can be accessed, but isn't the main focus. The more information you can provide the better, but you want that information well-organized and out of the way so people who already know what they want don't have to wade through it before getting to your shopping cart or order form.

Convincing the Customer that it wants YOUR Product.

What is more difficult is convincing the customer that you, specifically, are the person to buy from. Internet competition isn't all about high rankings on the search engines; quality, price, service, and simple professionalism are all things you have to think about. Internet shoppers are looking for deals - it's a big part of the reason people don't all just type the broadest, simplest search term and buy from whoever comes up first. They are, however, also quite suspicious. The classic writing maxim "show, don't tell" applies - if you can offer clear proof of your product's superiority, it gives you an edge. Of course, especially for a new business, offering that kind of proof to a savvy internet shopper is not always easy.

Closing the Deal.

Once you've done all that, you're almost ready to make money on the internet - all you need to do is actually get the customer to pull out the credit card. A professional shopping cart, especially from a trusted source, with all security measures in place is a must. Making this step quick, easy, and efficient is critical. Keep the clicks, open windows, form fields, and other hoops to jump through or signs of complexity to the bare minimum. This is the worst place for errors to occur or the customer to lose interest or trust - the last thing you want to do is have all your hard work getting the customer ready to buy go towards giving the next site below you in the SERPs the sale!
