Five Important Things You Should Learn That Will Help You Easily Apply Concrete Floor Paint

It used to be that concrete floors were just that: concrete

. But now decorative concrete through the use of floor paint, stain, stamps, and more has changed all that. Now, concrete flooring can be quite elaborate and offers many options for you.

Step One - Determine how old your concrete flooring is because ample curing time is needed before paint should be applied to concrete after it is poured, usually 3-6 months. Additionally, if your floor is older or has previous paint or sealers that may be peeling, then you'll need to remove it. A chemical stripping agent usually works best, although power washing sometimes works as well.

Step Two - Cleaning the dirt and debris is next. A hard bristle broom, shop vac, and maybe even a power washer with a bleach application can all be used for this step. Basically, whatever you need to do to get the floor clean, but let it dry for about 24 hours afterward if you get it wet.

Step Three - Filling any cracks or holes is next in the process of applying paint. Any type of filler, usually some kind of resin, will work. Follow instructions and you'll be fine. You may also need to apply an etching compound, which gives the floor a subtle roughness that gives the paint something to bite into. If you etch, be sure to vacuum the dust afterward before completing this step.

Step Four - Priming is not mandatory, but it's pretty simple and inexpensive to apply and makes the paint last longer. Ask where you buy the paint what the best primer is for that particular type, then follow directions for it's application.

Step Five - Application of the paint itself is next and not just any paint will do. It must be concrete paint because it has special compounds designed specifically for concrete. A roller will apply the paint much faster and you'll need to apply it in multiple thin coats. Also, allow plenty of drying time between each coat. You'll find that concrete paint is far more durable than many other paints.
