1. What are you looking for?

You may have it whittled down to the exact hotel and resort, especially if you've been there before, but if not you'll want to think about the basics of what you are looking for from your holiday. Maybe you want a pool at the hotel, a two-bedroom apartment, a beach within walking distance, a family-friendly resort with lots for kids to do, etc.

2. Can friends recommend somewhere?

Once you've got a list of requirements, start talking to your friends and other families that have children of a similar age. Where do they go for a family holiday? Have they been somewhere recently and had a good time? Find out where they've been, where they liked and where they didn't. But, as their preferences may be different to your own, ask wider questions about what the resort and/or hotel is like.

3. Have you found the best places to look?

Nowadays, many of the better holiday deals can be found online rather than in the local travel agency. But with lots of websites all purporting to offer the same thing, it can be tricky to know where to begin. Firstly, find a one-stop facility, that can provide everything you need - including insurance. By doing your searching in one place, it'll be a much smoother process. Also, why not find someone that specialises in family holidays or is backed up by a family brand? That way, you know that your best interests are at heart.

4. Are you determined enough?

I recently spoke to someone who decided not to go away because there weren't any good deals about. There are! You just need to persevere. Yes, it can be a long process, but the right family package holidays is out there and waiting for you. If you're still struggling, then consider refining your list of requirements. Is there a resort you've never heard of that would be perfect? Find a few packages that you like the look of, then do your research to find out how they measure up.

5. Do you need insurance and parking?

Once you've found your dream holiday, you're going to need insurance. If you're using the right one-stop facility, then they should be able to provide that for you. Cheap family travel insurance is available, so don't pay over the odds. If you need parking too, then the better travel providers will be able to provide discounted deals for you to incorporate into your package.
