There may still be danger of damage when floods have been caused by weather, because even though the waters have mostly cleared, the ground could possibly be fully saturated.
This may cause pressure on the outside walls of a basement, which means they could submit to collapsing. When it comes to treating the situation, make sure that you never enter a saturated room or basement without first check the electricity.
Circuit breakers should be shut off before you attempt to work on fixing the problem; if not, you run the risk of electrocution. Even minimal flooding can leave you susceptible to electric currents that could harm or kill you.
One of the biggest issues that one experiences after this type of disaster is bacteria growth that can cause molding and mildew. Make sure that you are disinfecting each surface as you work to clear out the area.
Mold can easily spread into all different types and sizes of space, so you must be sure and get it before it can develop into a serious problem. Lower levels especially are one place that bacteria thrive in, because of the cool, damp conditions.
After you have cleared the water out, you may need to enlist help from a professional carpet or floor cleaner. Most companies have a specific system and collection of chemicals that they use to prevent mold and mildew from forming.
Not only will this prevent you from having to replace all of your flooring, but it can also help prevent the offensive smell that often occurs when carpets are soaked and sit for a long period of time. They may also be able to help you dry and clear out some of the moisture.
It is important to keep the area that you are working on ventilated, because it is possible to breathe in bacteria, mold spores, and fumes from disinfectant. You may find that fans are a good option for drying and also ventilating the room.
Make sure that you get rid of the moisture in an area that is several feet away from your home and sewage or septic system; otherwise, you could cause an overload or back up of the system.
