Fixing The 3 Big, Common Mistakes In Dog Training

As a responsible dog owner you should realize that it is essential to devote a good

deal of time to training your puppy for you to get the result you want - a friendly, well-behaved dog, who will follow your commands eagerly and without fuss.

1. Calling your dog while he is having fun running around to leash him or clip his nail or things that he may dislike will make him resent those times. Eventually, he will associate your calls to unpleasant things. It is of utmost importance to establish an atmosphere where he associates your call with delightful experience, rather than relating it to something he has an aversion to or linking it to some form of 'punishment.' Give your dog a reason to look forward to your call. Speak in a cheerful voice without a trace of annoyance or irritation. Surprise him with some petting, rewards, praises and telling him what a good dog he is. This is the best time to create a rapport between you and your dog by building his trust on you.

2. Ignoring your dog's bad behavior, because you presume that he will soon 'outgrow' it is not a good idea; he wont. You have to inculcate early on the appropriate and acceptable behavior. Teach him the concept of basic house rules, like which parts of the house are off limits, chewing is not allowed, and so on.

3. Never ever hit your dog or cause him any physical pain as a method of training or as a form of punishment for bad behavior. This can either cause your dog to be aggressive towards human or become a subservient wimp. You can focus on emphasizing on his good behavior instead, and reward him for being a good dog.

Dogs are known to have a very strong sense of loyalty and they have great capacity to understand the concept of relationship. They will naturally gravitate to showing their loyalty and gratitude by trying to please you. Let your dog feel appreciated. You can't go wrong on that and soon you will have a sociable dog, friendly and tolerant towards human interaction - just like you want him to be!
