Flac Player and Other Programs to Play Flac Files
Flac Player and Other Programs to Play Flac Files
Flac files are lossless audio codecs that offer high quality of audio and features average compression, unlike the ones used for MP3 files. However, you will need a specific type of Flac player for these files because it is not recognized by a Windows player by default. If you have a Flac file, then you have two options: you must get a flac player or find an audio player that provides support for flac files.
There is a number of options available as alternative to a flac player such as Winamp, Windows Media Player, and Foobar2000. It is therefore important to look into each of the alternative choices for flac player to find out how you can enjoy most of your flac audio files.
Winamp
This is one of the most popular choices available when there is no built-in flac player around. To be specific, the Winamp 5 program features built-in support for flac files. However, you might want to look into the appropriate settings for this alternative flac player upon installation. There is also a Pro version for Winamp player that enable you to rip CDs and convert them into flac files. However, this version will cost additional fees on your part. But if you are willing to spend money or have the budget for it, then it will be worthy to enjoy your flac files.
The quality of the audio in Winamp is decent enough although there are times wherein the kitchen sink syndrome is manifested. In addition, you might have problem with the right settings for this alternative flac player given the confusion with recent licenses. If you are looking for a general music player not just as flac player, then it is a good option since you won't have problem with compatibility for most of the time. You might want to look for something else that is comparably lighter if you wanted to use it solely for playing flac files.
Windows Media Player
Here is another great option for alternative to a flac player. This must be considered as a final option though since this is not the best music player around. By default, the Windows Media Player does not have support for flac files but this can be enabled. First, you need to get a DirectShow filter for the flac file and you can use an Open Source community for that, if you do not have one readily available. Once the filter had been installed, you can now use the Windows Media Player as flac player to read the files you have available.
Foobar2000
This is probably the best option around as alternative flac player because this freeware program provides support for flac files. And yet, you can customize it according to your heart's desire and have numerous features available. There is a steep learning curve for the use of this program, though. It is far more complex to operate as compared to the Windows Media Player and Winamp for playing flac files so it would be smart to invest a few hours learning how the various features work before you can enjoy its use to the fullest.
