Flexible Packaging Machinery | Why It Has Become Such A Popular Method Of Packaging
The packaging industry has many hurdles they must jump over before the products they package reach their final destination. If products are damaged before they reach the end consumers hands they have the right to return them costing the retailer money. So how has this problem been resolved in order to reduce damaged goods?
Throughout all the different places down the supply chain, packages end up coming direct contact with either a person or a machine before it reaches the store shelf. Depending on the interaction with the product, machines can be configured to handle products differently depending on how fragile they are. This can be done my programming the machine to recognize the product its handling and recall how much pressure to use in order to safely move in.
With the technological breakthroughs in machinery, it is no wonder why the production line operates so smoothly and efficiently and in some cases maintenance free. However after studying the different processes these products may experience, it seems they are most vulnerable during the labeling process. How do labeling machines know how much pressure to use when labeling each product?
Obviously packages such as boxes can handle more pressure than a bag or flexible package can to paste a label on. This is where detailed software and precision come into play. Just to be clear, printing is not the same as labeling, printing involves using ink that is painted on the package itself, labeling only deals with placing a label (pre-printed) on the package.
Some machines, depending on the product, may place the label on the package before it is filled, others may do it afterwards. To ensure the contents inside aren't harmed, the label applicator lightly press down on the package so the label sticks to the surface. After it receives its label it may run under a brush which glides over the surface of the product to ensure the label is secure enough.
Some examples of flexible package labeling can be found on perishable products such as Purdue Chicken, and other meat products, vegetables, bread and in some cases bags of chips. After studying these products and the reason behind why they go through a different labeling process is because they have a considerable amount of information that must be printed on the labels themselves. For example, they need a packaged date and a sell/expire date, net weight, and price. Boxes and bottles/cans usually receive a stamp that indicates a sell by date rather than a label.
Flexible packaging has become very popular in the packaging industry. It is more cost efficient then box materials and provides an ideal surface for vibrant colors once the package has received its design. This packaging process isn't without is skeptics, there are many people who feel this anti-bio degradable material is harmful to the earth taking it centuries to decompose.
