Flood Fears

Over the past few years, British homeowners have watched with horror as new stories report horrific flooding in areas of the country. Rivers have burst their banks, and dams and other flood barriers have been unable to cope with the heavy rainwater. Fields have turned to lakes, and villages have been cut off from the rest of the world, not to mention entire floors of homes being flooded and people losing their livelihoods.

With global warming playing a large part in these disasters, it looks like these biblical scenes could be something we see on a yearly basis. Home insurance companies are set to lose a record four billion pounds per year by 2035 on repairing the damage caused by excess water, unless the industry and government join forces to come up with a better flood contingency plan.

Houses are currently being built quickly and cheaply, and if we are to save them when the water starts rising, then this is going to have to be reconsidered. The government has pledged more money to improving flood defences, as the average claim on a Home Insurance policy for water related catastrophes is around the 20,000 mark.

Currently, one in six homes in the UK is at risk of flooding, a worryingly high statistic. The government recommend that you make sure that your roof is kept in good condition, and if you have a basement, that you keep your eye out for damp patched and mould, all are signs that your house could let water in should there be excess.
