The Arno river, along its route pass through several towns and cities, the most important Florence, Empoli, Santa Croce, Pontedera and Pisa. Among the bridges that cross it, the Ponte Vecchio is unique, with the characteristic shops of jewelers built on it. Crossed by the noble Vasari Corridor, is the only bridge in the city to be passed unharmed through the Second World War. In addition to the Uffizi, Florence has other museums which would be the main artistic attraction of any other big city in the world: the Accademia Gallery, the Bargello and the Pitti Palace with its eight museums, including the Palatine Gallery. The Florentines boast of possessing the best example of beauty in both women (Botticelli's Venus) and male (Michelangelo's David). The left bank of the Arno (the Oltrarno) is an area rich in monuments which can still be felt among his old artisan shops, the atmosphere of old Florence.
The known history of Florence begins in 59 BC with the founding of a village ("Florentia") for Roman veterans. Seat of a diocese since the fourth century, the town passed through periods of Byzantine, Ostrogoths, Lombards domination during which people sometimes came down to just 1000 people. From the tenth century the city grew, and from 1115 became an independent municipality. In the thirteenth century the city was divided by the struggle between the Ghibellines, supporters of the Holy Roman Empire, and Guelph, in favor of the Roman Papacy. After various events, the Guelphs won (Colle Val d'Elsa 17 June 1269), but soon they divided internally into "Whites and Blacks." During the fifteenth century Florence alone had an income higher than the entire England, thanks to large industries and banks in which there were about eighty of subsidiaries and offices, the latest spread in much of Europe.
The first period of Medici domination ended with the return of a republican government, influenced by the teachings of radical Dominican prior Girolamo Savonarola (who were executed in 1498 and that, before he died, left a treatise on the government of Florence). Another important figure was Niccolo Machiavelli, whose prescriptions for Florence's government by a strong figure are often read as an abuse of political legitimacy. On 16 May 1527 the Florentines drove out the Medici again - given the power by the Spaniards in 1512 - and re-established a republic.
