Specialist flooring manufacturer Flowcrete were quick off the blocks when they provided an ultra-fast curing system for a new state-of-the-art sports facility in north-east Scotland. Based on the site of the former Chris Anderson Stadium, Aberdeen Sports Village is a 28 million development by partnering bodies Aberdeen City Council, the University of Aberdeen and SportScotland. The complex includes a full-size indoor football pitch, indoor athletics facilities, squash courts, gym and exercise studios, as well as a high-tech sports science centre, plus a dining and conference area. 3000 square metres of seamless Flowfast Quartz and 1800m of coved skirting were installed throughout the building, including the main entrance, canteen, changing areas and communal areas, by Flowcrete approved contractor, Industrial Floor Treatments (IFT) of East Kilbride. The quick curing floor - which is ready to walk on just two hours after application was specially mixed in a granite shade, as requested by project architects, Reiach and Hall of Edinburgh. In addition 600 square metres of Isocrete heavy duty K-screed were installed by IFT in the main entrance area and canteen. Flowfast is transforming the industrial and commercial flooring sector in Scotland. Late last year, Flowcrete and IFT jointly secured the Project of the Year Award from the resin industry trade body FeRFA, for their work at Glasgow University Small Animal Hospital, where Flowfast was also specified. At Aberdeen Sports Village, as well as speed of application, Flowfast was selected because it could be applied directly to the concrete base without the need for a damp proof membrane, smoothing compounds or adhesive. It was also possible for the floor finish to be coved up the concrete bench seating in the spectator area, creating a seamless and stylish finish. James Grimley, project architect from Reiach and Hall said: We originally specified vinyl flooring for this project, but we saw resin flooring used in a building nearby and the client liked the look of the product. We were even able to match the floor colour to that of the concrete used outside, which had been specially mixed in a granite grey, to tie in with the local context of Aberdeen.
