Floyd Nation's Best WR?

Floyd Nation's Best WR?

While the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, college football's greatest independent, are usually no short of any name recognition, or publicity, they actually do have one piece of the puzzle who perhaps does not receive the props that he rightfully deserves. Notre Dame's number one wide receiver, Michael Floyd, is perhaps the best wide receiver in the land of college football. What is known for sure, is that he may be the best wide receiver that you are not unsure of. But, why is it that you aren't aware?

Perhaps it is because of the injuries. Floyd was lost in the shuffle when it came to looking into the final stats of the season, and rightfully so, in a way. Floyd was only able to play in six games last season. He started the season with a bang, 350 yards and 5 touchdowns in his first three games, on the cusp of national stardom. A leg injury kept him on the sidelines for all but the season's final three games, and those games were equally impressive. Floyd, in his six games, was able to finish with 800 yards and 9 touchdowns. Spread that over an entire season, and you are looking at 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns. Those are Bilitnekoff Award statistics.

There are a few wild-cards in the equation, some good, some bad. Golden Tate, his teammate, was last seasons award winner. Tate is gone now, out of the equation, leaving Floyd to have the reigns of the number one himself. It is now time to see if Floyd's success was based on his natural talent, or based on having the nation's best along side of him. Another thing working in his favor, is former Cincinnati Bearcats coach Brian Kelly taking over the helm of Notre Dame head coach. Kelly is notorious for a pass heavy offense, and that will not change at Notre Dame. This should give Floyd even more opportunities to catch balls and compile stats.

It would all be for naught, however, if Notre Dame, as a team is not successful. Award selectors usually do not look at players who inflate stats on poor teams. You have to contribute to a winner to be recognized. And that may be tough, especially with Jimmy Clausen also on to the NFL. Brian Kelly will give the new quarterback every chance to succeed, but if he falters, you can expect Floyd to as well.

It is a new day for Notre Dame, a new era beginning. More so than anything, it may be up to Michael Floyd to make sure that the Irish start out this new decade with a bang, and I believe he will deliver the goods.
