Folk Punk - New Genres of Folk Music
To start with, folk punk was known as rogue folk. Folk punk is as the name indicates a mixture of punk rock and folk music. The Pogues were one of the first bands play this form of music during the 1980s. The Pogues were commercially successful, with several top 20 hits, including Fairytale of New York.. The Pogues pioneered this genre of music during the early 1980s. They had a great deal of commercial success with this genre of music producing many top 10 hits. Their biggest hit was Fairytale of New York.
The majority of the bands who perform folk punk write their own music and songs. This is quite rare for folk music bands who tend to write new songs set to the music of traditional songs and reinterpret older folk songs giving them a modern spin. Folk punk bands use mainly sea shanties or gypsy music on the rare occassions they re-work existing songs.
Popular folk punk artists include The Pogues, Billy Bragg, The Levellers, and Oysterband. The Men They Couldn't Hang were less commercially successful than other folk punk bands, but are very big on the folk circuit. They perform an English form of folk punk, which many people, who do not normally like folk music or punk rock, enjoy.
American folk punk is a newer even more popular genre of folk punk. Violent Femmes pioneered this genre of music. Popular American Folk bands include: Ghost Mice, The Bike Is A Pipe Bomb, Defiance, Ohio and Against Me!. The majority of these bands record on the Plan-It-X-Record label. Most American folk punk bands started their careers playing traditional punk rock, but switched to American folk punk in the early 2000s. American folk punk is very political and tends to be far lef or anarchist in nature, it is closer to its punk roots than folk punk is.
Celtic punk is a similar genre of folk music that has its roots in Folk punk. It is very similar to folk punk, but uses irish or celtic folk music to give it its rhythm and feel. It is also commercially successful, but on a smaller scale than folk punk. The great thing about this genre is that it appeals to the whole spectrum of people, especially within the Celtic cultures. It has the Celtic rhythms older generations are familiar with, but has a hard edge that the younger generations appreciate.
Sadly, nowadays there is very little going on on the folk punk scene at least not a great deal that is commercially successful. However, turbulent political times are what leads to a new generation of anarchistic musicians, so you can expect a new crop of folk punk groups pretty soon. In the meantime, the younger generation are experimenting with combining rap, house and folk rhythms and musical styles to produce yet another innovative version of folk music. Anyone that thinks folk music is on the wane is in for a shock.
