Football Fans to Rescue the Economy!
A recent survey of football fans' done in a pub somewhere over a swift half' or something has come to the brilliant conclusion that football fans will save the economy this summer. Hooray!
Unsurprisingly, whether England get knocked out in the first round or not, football fans are expected to increase their spending hugely on food, booze, betting, newspapers and televisions during the World Cup. (In fact, I myself recently bought a new TV a big one and one of my first thoughts was "this is going to be great to watch the football on"!
This rise in spending will benefit a huge number of companies from bookmakers, supermarkets, pubs, restaurants, electronics stores, etc. What's more is you're sure to notice the rise in demand and activity in these industries with companies vying for customers: the World Cup will not only benefit suppliers but also consumers.
The government should be rubbing its hands together. With the high taxation on the humble British pint, if we drink enough this summer we might be able to pay off the deficit (there's a call to arms if I ever heard one)! And on top of this is the expected rise in VAT which will further add to the tax revenue the government will receive from the World Cup spending.
"Despite edging back into growth at the end of 2009, the UK economy remains in need of the boost to spending that can be delivered by the World Cup, ideally underpinned by a successful tournament for the England team," said Richard Cope (of Mintel, the company responsible for the consumer research).
A boost in consumer spending, like that seen over Christmas, would be a welcome boost for the UK economy, and, in fact, the global economy. I am sure than English football fans will not be the only ones keen to enjoy themselves during the tournament.
Whether football fans become national heroes for rescuing the economy or not, it's refreshing to see some good press for the good old English football hooligan! I'm looking forward to the tournament and now I'm looking forward to seeing if this research comes true, it would be great to see England get to the finals AND see our economy come out of the doldrums for (a wet English) summer!
