For Really Fresh Coffee, Try Coffee Direct From The Harvest

Everyone knows that the key to a good cup of coffee is freshly ground coffee beans

. For an even better cup of coffee, you need freshly roasted coffee beans that are freshly ground. One of the best ways to get that kind of coffee is to buy green coffee direct from the coffee roaster. The only way to get fresher beans is to purchase green coffee beans and roast them yourself.

Coffee had made its way to the Caribbean Islands, Mexico and South America long before the Boston Tea Party, but after all the tea was thrown into the harbor, coffee became almost a patriotic drink in the Colonies.

The green coffee beans were brought to the Colonies and sold. The colonist would take these beans home and roast them over their own fires. Once cooled, the beans would be ground and fresh coffee could be made. This is how coffee continued to be made until shortly after World War I.

Sometime around 1930, the transportation and canning processes improved, we moved to ground coffee in a can. The convenience of canned coffee grounds soon lead way to people no longer roasting their own coffee.

For over 50 years, we only used this convenient coffee, or even worse, its instant cousin. Then there began to be a demand for better tasting coffee. Mrs. Olsen had tried to find that better cup, but it was not to be found in pre-ground coffee. Instead, we learned again the importance of grinding coffee freshly before brewing. Now we have learned that even fresher coffee is available in freshly roasted coffee.

Most local coffee houses and coffee roasters roast their coffee in an oven that has a large tub that continually turns in order to prevent burning of individual beans. The roaster looks like a large tumble dryer tub. The tub allows the hot air of the oven to enter and surround each bean. The bean are roasted to the desired light, medium or dark roast. The darker the roast of the coffee, the stronger the flavor. A light roast allows the subtle flavors to stand out, but a dark roast makes for a much more robust flavored coffee.

If you want to try roasting your own coffee, you will first need to find a distributer for green coffee beans. Then you will want to decide what method you want to use to roast the beans.

While beans can be roasted in a shallow pan over high heat with constant stirring, most people find that the results are often inconsistent. Home roasters have developed methods that use air popcorn poppers and bread machines to roast the beans with greater success. If you so desire, you can also buy coffee roasters in many higher quality department stores. Be sure that you watch closely, as you do not want to burn your coffee beans.

Green coffee beans have a shelf life of about a year if kept dry and at a temperature where your body is comfortable. Do not store green coffee beans in either the freezer or the refrigerator. The humidity in the former is too low and in the later is too high

Now, isn't that a better cup of coffee.
