For times tables which would you say 'learn table' or 'learn tables'
?
What is the correct way to say it? Is it 'learn table' or learn tables?
Well, you can say to children you need to learn the 4 times table or you need to learn the 4 times tables. I think most people would say the latter, and so you would say learn tables rather than learn table.
When you write down "4 x table", for most people it actually looks incorrect even though it is just one single table or in other words 'a table'.
Most people will refer to the "4 times tables", the plural, rather than the singular, "4 times table". The plural feels to be the right way to say it to me., so learn tables rather then learn tables would be what I might say.
So, is it "learn table" or is it "learn tables"? Does it really matter?
What you can say is that in most areas of the world it is the plural that is used, but not everywhere.
My conclusion is to say what you are happy using, the one that feels best to you.
The more important point is that your children learn the times tables, all of them, really well.
We turn now to another question and I would say a more important one.
When you learn times should you learn them up to the ten times tables or the twelve times tables.
If you left school some time ago it is very likely that you learned the tables right up to the twelve times table.
The reason for this was simple; the requirements for schools at this time were set in this way. Children had to learn the times tables right up to at least the 12 times tables.
Today the position is somewhat different with schools teaching the times tables only as far as the 10x tables.
Which tables should your children learn up to? The answer is simply this.
Children should go so far as to learn the ten x tables when their schools requires this and learn beyond this if it is this that is what is required by your children's school.
The 11 x and 12 x tables are useful and good to know, though it is the first 10 that are used all the time.
The thing that is of the utmost importance is that your children have the ability to learn tables so that they know them instantly, particularly up to the ten times tables.
Why? Because to learn tables up to the 10 times tables is to learn the building blocks to other extremely important areas of maths namely; mental maths, multiplication and division.
We started this article with the question as to whether we should say learn table or learn tables; singular or plural. Let's use both ways for our last important message.
If your children's school requires that they learn table eleven and table twelve then that is what your children need to do. As the tables are the building blocks of maths what is also important is that children learn tables so well that they know them the answers in an instant.
They need a method that is masses of fun and uses visual images, and the tables themselves, to create a memory of the tables including the answers.
If you encourage your children to remember the times tables using such a method they will become embedded in their memories.
