The Ford Transit has been the best-selling light commercial vehicle in Europe for 40 years, and in some countries the term "Transit" has passed into common usage as a generic term applying to any light commercial van in the Transit's size bracket.

The first Ford Transit was introduced in October 1965, and has been in continuous production in three basic generations till today. The majority of Ford Transits are built in Southampton UK, with production also in Germany, Turkey and for the Chinese market in China.

One of the reasons the Ford Transit was and is so popular is the sheer number of different body styles it comes in: panel vans in long and short wheelbase forms, pick-up truck, minibuses, crew-cabs to name but a few.

According to Top Gear British police have reported that in the 1970s 95% of all robberies in which the criminals used a vehicle, involved the Ford Transit.

The Ford Transit was a proper work horse, due to its various models it became the household name for commercial vehicles. Builders, farmers and businesses appreciated the generous load space it offered.

The UK fell in love with the Transit, and this love has been strong for many years, I recently saw a restored Mark 2 Ford Transit in Scotland it reminded me of my dad's grocery shop, he had one to get stock and do the deliveries with.
