Foreclosures Causing Health Problems

The reason is not difficult to find as to how foreclosures in America are causing

corporate sector employees in distant India to suffer health problems. After all it is one big global village for good or for bad.

The story of the global meltdown began with the humble Joe in America losing his home to foreclosures. One Joe followed another until the number rose from hundreds and thousands to touch millions. The mortgages had been all bundled together, sliced and sold to investors across the world. But when the value began to fall and the worth of the securities fell to be far less than what the accounts books said there was mayhem let loose.

In India the service sector came to be largely affected as there was a reduced demand for goods and services in cash strapped USA. Consequently many are losing their jobs in India. The lucky ones are surviving on half pay packets. The fear and tension are telling on the health of the employees especially those in the Information and Technology stream, media, market research, knowledge processing and other outsourcing activities like financial and telecom services. This was revealed by a survey conducted by a group in the industry, Assocham, and the facts exposed on World Health Day.

Nearly half the working force in the IT sector are suffering from diseases stemming from urban lifestyle depression, acute headaches, obesity, backaches, spondilyits, blood sugar problems, tension and the like. The study Corporate Workforce: Chronic and Lifestyle Disease surveyed 210 corporate staffers from 200 companies across 18 general sectors of the economy and focused on the corporate employees.

Out of the 54% reporting illness, 23% suffer from spondilyits and 16% from depression. 18% are obese and 20% complain of sleep disorders. Those suffering from fatigue and high blood pressure are 13% and 9% respectively. D.S. Rawat the general secretary of Assocham said, Corporate employees have to survive the stiff global competitive environment to save their jobs, particularly so in the economic crises affecting the world. This puts pressure on their health leading to silent diseases like heart attack, strokes or even cancer. From the media sector 51% complained of ill health.

The point to note is that although these are typical urban lifestyle problems, the situation has been aggravated and become worse since the collapse of the world economy starting with foreclosures in America as unemployment fear is stalking them.
