A garage has become more than a place for cars. In many homes, this attached structure is used for general storage or is transformed into an activity space. If you want to do something different with your garage but are not sure about where to place your cars, consider using carports. Made out of a metal frame and polyethylene tarp, a portable carport can be placed anywhere on your property and is capable of sheltering more than just vehicles. From covering your car to storing a boat for several months, carports are ideal for long-term storage and prevent UV and water damage.

Portable carports those which are not attached to or built into a structure are constructed out of a steel frame and a polyethylene tarp or metal top. The powder-coated or galvanized steel frame, once anchored into the ground, can withstand several pounds of snow and holds up to high winds.

The top, as well, provides a different set of protective properties. Steel is naturally UV resistant and waterproof, and as part of a carport, the steel top is coated with silicon for durability. The tarp, however, is treated to be UV resistant, mildew resistant, rot proof, and waterproof. These properties keep water and harmful UV rays out and away from your vehicle and, by allowing air to circulate inside, prevent mold, mildew, and dry rot from building up on your car.

Carports are sold in two types, enclosed and valance, and one may fit your needs better. A valance-style carport is open on all sides and has a tarp or metal top with overhangs on both sides. Such a shelter is ideal for sheltering your car, and in winter or in the rain, your vehicle remains relatively dry. While others are clearing off snow and chipping away at ice around the wheels or on the windows, your car is ready to go. All you need to do is clear a path to the street.

If a vehicle is being kept in storage, however, more coverage is needed, and enclosed carports provide this. With tarps on all sides, enclosed carports offer full coverage, blocking out all UV rays and water, and can be used for storing a boat or RV. Keeping such a seasonal vehicle outdoors results in damage and lost use. Consistent exposure to UV rays, for example, can crack or fade the surface, and over time, water also accumulates on the vehicle, leading to mildew, mold, or dry rot buildup. Instead of taking a risk, fully protect your vehicle.
