Forget about the theory, make classroom learning all about reality
The subjects in which children tend to do best at school are those with which they can really relate.
If there is a feeling that 'this doesn't really have anything to do with me and what I like to do', then that pupil is very likely to soon become disengaged from the classroom proceedings, and either disappear into their own world, or want to be disruptive - which can affect the whole class's learning. One of the best ways of preventing them from having such thoughts is to ensure that they are involved in what is being taught to the class.
While each pupil's experience of life, and the ways in which they have been affected by this, will be very different, being able to put them in the situation of using the knowledge they are acquiring is one of the best methods of getting them to take it in. The information has to be shown to be relevant to them. One of the best ways of achieving this is to ask them the question: 'How would you respond if you were placed in this situation?' They are then forced to think creatively about their answers, as well as to connect them to experiences and situations in their own lives.
Some subjects are still best taught by rote - that is, by sitting down and reading a text book, and absorbing as much of its contents as possible. But children are examined far more today on what they learn from particular facts, and how they can apply those lessons to other situations in which they might find themselves.
Theories, equations and formulae are all vital for explaining how things work, and why items around us are good at what they do. But explaining the benefits of having those devices, and why they make our lives so much better is something which is better achieved by practical, hands-on experience. And there is no substitute for classroom technology in being able to pass on such experiences to the largest number of people in the shortest possible time.
Lots of subjects - maths, sciences, crafts and languages to name a few - are best learned when they are placed in the context of real life. Even learning complex formulae is made much easier when a practical application of it can be illustrated. After all, facts are precious, but being able to know when and how to use them is even more than that - it's priceless.
