Fosamax Backlashes: How Can I Avoid It?

Fosamax belongs to the classification bisphosphonates which augment bone mineral density by stimulation bone formation and restraining bone resorption or breakdown at the same time. There is no diagnostic exam that detects ONJ it is only diagnosed when a jawbone is exposed which lasts for more than 8 weeks. In most cases, patient would feel pain or discomfort that results from an infection, swelling of soft tissue, drainage and exposure of the bone.

To diminish the risk of ONJ, proper oral hygiene with regular dental care should be practiced by the patient. Also, inform your dentist prior to any dental procedure even if its just a minor one that you are taking Fosamax or other bisphosphonates. On the other hand, patients who have not started their bisphosphonate therapy are suggested to wait until any immediate dental procedure is finished even if the procedure is just minor.

Atypical fracture of the femur. On October 13 last year, the US Food and Drug Administration announced the need for a change in the label warnings of Fosamax and other bisphosphonates to add 2 atypical femur fractures on the warning list. Big studies have said that the consumption of the drug over a long period of time could lead to the development of such fracture. Yet, FDA insisted that the benefits still outweighs the risk which seems to be pretty rare.

As advised by the FDA physicians might need to consider putting a temporary stall to the therapy if their patients feel significant dull, aching pain in the thigh or groin. In addition to that, some health care providers prefer letting the patients take the drug for a duration of 4 years or less. The bottom line is, treating osteoporosis aims to avoid the occurrence of fracture and sustaining a Fosamax femur fracture is never part of the plan.
