Old, leaky windows consume large amounts of energy and waste your hard-earned money
. According to expert window installers, installing new awning windows is easy when you follow the four simple steps outlined below.
First, measure the existing window frame. For the proper installation of awning windows, you need a one-fourth inch clearance allowance on all sides between the frame and the window.
Second, insert the window into the frame from the outside of the house until the flashing band is even with the outside opening. Have a helper on the inside of the window use a level and plumb line to insure that the window alignment is correct.
Next, add the flashing and nail it into place. The inside helper will place shims between the window and the frame to keep the awning windows in proper alignment. Use small tacks or glue to keep the shims in place. Check the level alignments again to be certain the window has not shifted and then nail the awning windows into place from the outside.
Finally, trim any excess shimming that extends outside the frame. Pack fiberglass insulation into the cracks between the awning windows and their framework. Install finishing trim on the inside and outside of your home to complete your do-it-yourself replacement window project.
Take pride in your finished product. Properly installed windows will provide years of enjoyment. Keep in mind that awning windows have the advantage of offering light and ventilation to your home. Because of the hinged top, awning windows open from the bottom outward and will help keep your house dry yet ventilated at those times when the rain falls lightly.
